Frequently Asked Questions
How deep should mulch be?
Most planting beds do best with 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch. Going deeper than about 4 inches can trap too much moisture and reduce airflow around roots.
What is the difference between shredded wood, pine bark, rubber, and stone mulch?
Shredded wood and pine bark break down over time and improve soil. Rubber lasts longer but does not add organic matter. Stone is durable and decorative, but it holds heat and is harder to change later.
How much does one bag of mulch cover?
A 2 cubic foot bag covers about 12 square feet at 2 inches deep or about 8 square feet at 3 inches deep. Coverage changes with depth, so deeper beds always need more bags.
When should I refresh mulch?
Many organic mulch beds need a light top-up once a year. Full replacement is usually less frequent unless the mulch has faded, thinned out, or decomposed heavily.
Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?
For larger jobs, bulk mulch is often cheaper per cubic yard than bagged mulch. Bags can still make sense for small touch-ups, tight access, or clean retail installs.
